At Polhawn Fort

The Beach

Low Tide or High Tide - Two Beautiful Backdrops for Your Wedding Day

When you’re planning your wedding at Polhawn Fort, one of the special details to consider is the tide. Couples often ask whether low tide or high tide is “better” - but truly, they’re just different expressions of the same stunning coastline.

High tide feels wonderfully dramatic, with the sea right up against the rocks and waves adding movement and atmosphere to your backdrop. Low tide reveals the golden sands below, creating a softer, more expansive coastal feel. As the shoreline stretches out, you see more of the natural curves and textures of the bay, bringing a sense of space, light and calm to your setting.

Some couples love the energy and movement of the waves; others are drawn to the openness and serenity of the coastline. There’s no right or wrong - just the backdrop that feels perfect for you and the atmosphere you want to create on your wedding day.

Low Tide

Low tide at Polhawn Fort reveals a beautifully soft, expansive shoreline, perfect for capturing the calm and openness of the coast. This is the ideal time to plan a beachside celebration, as a 3-hour window around low water exposes the sandy areas and the striking “fingers” of rock stretching seaward, creating natural spaces for your ceremony, photos, or relaxed gatherings.

High Tide

High tide at Polhawn Fort brings the sea right up to the rocks, creating a striking and dramatic coastal scene. At this point, the beach is mostly covered, leaving only a small area of flat stones at the high water mark above the waterline. This creates a naturally intimate space and a dynamic backdrop, perfect for romantic moments, photos, or a ceremony framed by the movement and sparkle of the waves.
